Barangay Profile
History
When Kabankalan became a town by virtue of the Philippines Commission Act 1612 which was passed into law on March 14, 1907 separating it from the town of Ilog, the area comprising what is now known as Barangay Uno was still a sitio of Bario Hilamonan. At that time the word ‘Bario’ was being used to describe the smallest government unit in any municipality or city. It was only on July 5, 1976 during the Martial Law era that the word “barrio” was officially
changed to Barangay.
Accordingly, in order to provide better services for the growing population, the government deemed it proper to split bigger barrios into several units which were then called barangays and one of those barrios that were split was barrio Hilamonan. The area comprising the present Barangay Uno which was then the sitio of Barrio Hilamonan was created as a separate Barangay with a total land area of 201.53 hectares. Its boundary covers the area from the south of highway Mabinay (now known officially as Aquiles Zayco Avenue) to the north of Cornelia Village (DE) and from Noceco Village (west) to the east in the Hilamonan creek.
Originally, the bigger portion of Barangay Uno was an agricultural area being owned by prominent families, namely, the Zayco families, Omarramentiria’s, Azcona’s, Maravilla’s, Rubin’s and a few others small landowners. The crops being produced at that time were mainly sugar cane, rice and corn. It was later converted to subdivisions when the demand for residential lots became profitable. These subdivisions are now known as Fzo Subdivisions, Azcona Subd. AR Zayco, Cornelia Village and Socorro Woods.
When Kabankalan became a component city in August 2, 1997 by virtue of RA 8297, Barangay Uno has grown so rapidly that it became the center commercial activities in the City in just a short period of time. It is now where large commercial buildings and modern public market are situated. Big businesses such department stores, banks, lending institutions, hotels, motels, and restaurants continue to abound and flourish in this area.
