History

To love one’s birthplace or Barangay for that matter, must learn first what the place is all about. Its place, past and people, the lives of its early resident’s one must know their way of living which contributed to the community as a whole.

As we looked back to the early years when Kabankalan City was still a village of Ilog town, Ilog was then a capital of Negros Occidental (Southern part) and a busy trading place for a port of sea vessel of the early 16th Century bringing goods and implements for the early settlers.

The Ilog river which traverse from the high mountains to the sea passes through the Burgos Street, Kabankalan town, for this place called Lugway – a Hub of early settlers to buy and sell their produce from the mountain via the banca or barotos and Lugway as the stop over.

The place now a 2-block residential place is now called Barangay 8, in the Poblacion. The original name before this was called as YLAYA in dialect, which means the Eastern part of the river. For the opposite is called ILAHUD, the western most part

YLAYA comprises 2 BARANGAY –Barangay 8 and Barangay 9, transportation through the river is best and fast and those early days, and Lugway now a street is a busy trading place for bartering and tabuan. Bamboos, limber, livestock, fowl, farm produce, like palay, corn, coffee, cassava, camote, bananas, ube, and native fruits like guyabanos, guavas, avocados, mangoes, legumes like mongo beans and peanuts are unloaded.

This place is also remembered to be the ferrying of passengers via the baroto to go to across Barangay Camugao. A man ferries passenger in this baroto – is the bangkero. Until now- for over hundreds of years the same manners are practiced.

The early settlers of this place were given cadastral lands as ordered by the Spanish Governor, thus original residents of this place had inherited their residential lots from their great grandfathers. For being the first settlers of this town – no Barangays existed then.

These were the first settlers, Albayda, Abarro, Gomez, Cayot, Jabagat (Nora Cayot ), Castel, Castillo, Delos Reyes, Tabacug, Pico, Moreño, Limsiaco, Malacapay, Magbanua, Moleta , Montalvo, Oyos, Ruiz, Repique, Tamayo , Tejada, Ramos, Padilla, Malala, Yusay, Tellerda, Yusay, Velez, Zafra, and Zayco. Some settlers came later as they comprised of people who now resides in this beautiful peaceful place.
