HISTORY
The mountainous, hilly and plains filled with vegetation of a virgin rainforest of rugged terrain with overlooking mountain ranges. Shaped the scenic beauty of the fertile lands founded of various species of fauna and flora. The area was inhibited by exotic wildlives species due to premier ecosystem such as called “ilahas” chicken grows in the wild. The species of rainforest trees were fully grown. The common trees found were in the virgin forest like rattan, wild edible fruits, orchids of different varieties, various species of fishes found in the fresh water and many others. Cogon grass is abundant to the said area which is the number one source of roofing materials for housing construction of natives. Hunting is the main source of meat for the natives. During those years natives are very strict and protective to their territories and anyone trespass their boundaries death is the option to them to defend their resources and tribes. The term Bantayan came from the native’s dialect which means watch over the outsiders or trespassers that may came and steal our resources.
For the past number of year’s natives live life in farming, hunting and fishing. Number of family arises and education is being introduced to natives in different area in Kabankalan. Neighboring tribes in the area united for peace and prosperity. The slush and burn farming or kaingin system have caused the land cultivation into food crops were the growing of rice and corn abundantly produced even without fertilizer application.
In 1954 the place recognized as the Barangay Bantayan, development gradually arises in the area and the first Teniente del Barrio is Pedro Española, he served from 1954- 1958. He had served his constituents with outmost dedication for the improvement of the said barangay. Next is Castor Parcon served 1958- 1963, Telefesto Baga served 1963- 1968, Eugenio Castro served 1968- 1973, Manuel Antoniego, Sr. served 1973- 1986, Ricardo Moneno served 1986- 1989 followed by Dionisio Calambro, Sr. served 1989- 2007 and Oscar M. Abajon served 2007- 2018, at present the Barangay Bantayan being served by Punong Barangay Manuel A. Antoniego, Jr.
Progress in Barangay Bantayan is numerous compared from its origin. It has Barangay Market and has its market day. Agricultural land is being farmed, palay, rice and sugarcane is the major crops produced. Also, vegetable farming is still present to the barangay. Farm to market road accessibility is also present for the farmers to bring their crops to the barangay market during market day. In this history BANTAYANAY FESTIVAL was created and it was celebrated in the month of January.
