History

The name BINICUIL was derived from the “ticue” / “tikwi” sounds brought by a weird bird common in the place before.

According to history, civilization started in once a swampy mangrove place bounded with hills in the east and river on the west. The quietness of the place finds anyone the great factor to stay and spend for livelihood.

Usual shrill and loud sounds of a mysterious bird could be heard hopping along the riverbank. Through the change of culture and way of living, the people gathered and formed a “Communidad”.

History suggested, men called “magahat” from the mountain, came and disturbed the lowland. They were killing men, confiscating what they could see beneficial for them; leaving nothing to every place they reached.

Inhabitants were prepared, as the tribe appeared. The appearance of the birds shouting “kwi” “kwi” served to remind them to seek for a place to hide.

With the familiar sound of the birds, people coined its name BINICUIL. When asked by anyone if where he will go, one would answer “mapa ticue”, “mapa tikwi”, that later the name Binicuil started.

The growth of communidad progressed in the year 1700, Kabankalan became the center of encomienda of Admiral Cristobal de Lugo y Montalbo with Cabeza Pedro Guanzon, the head of the place. Binicuil was the first barrio of Ilog which is the First capital of Negros Occidental and became later one of the barrio of Kabankalan and Binicuil was founded in the year 1710.

After a decade, year 1800, the country was opened to western colonizers. It never left Binicuil behind civilization and progress. Onward for a change, was the organization of its government. People chose their head of the barangay, Teniente Leoncio Entierro. It was him, the godfather of what Binicuil is today who introduced business and trade. In the mid – 1986, arms were loaded in Binicuil and Kabankalan for the hacienderos like Hilarion Cordova and Don Sotero Dojoles but they refrained to join the revolt knowing that they were not prepared and had no assurance of victory.

In the year 1907, Kabankalan separated from Ilog the former municipality of Cavancalan and reconstituting the same under the name of Kabankalan and become a municipality thru the passing of Philippine Commission Act. No.1612 and made So. Binicuil a Barangay with Esperidion Rivera the first barangay chairman/ lieutenant.
