History

Barangay Locotan is the farthest Barangay from poblacion with an approximate
distance of 52 kms. It got its name from the Hiligaynon term “NILUKOTAN” which
means “Surrounded or Coiled by” for indeed, this place is literally and physically surrounded
by two creeks the now called “ILAN and LOCOTAN Creeks”. Like any upland places in
the Province, Locotan at earlier times was inhabited by the natives, the “MAGHATS or
MAGAHATS”. The people were nomadic and sometimes clustered themselves to form
tribes. Their way of life was simple and traditional, but in the 1950’s this was changed when
a group of “UBOSNON” had migrated the place. The new settlers saw the place as
bountiful and vast thus more of their relatives and friends were convinced to settle in the
place with most of them were from Murcia and other Northern part of the province. The
natives then were forced to move deeper into the dense forest for they were afraid of the
new settlers who were armed by “paltik” rifles. But the gap was soon bridged for the settlers
themselves befriended the natives
