HOW MAGBALLO GOT ITS NAME
The pre-colonial barter system between the native Maghats and lowlanders was the basis of the Barangays name Magbalo is the Spanish derivation of combining the natives name Maghat and the Ilongo term of exchange Baylohanay. The present location ofthe Barangay used to be the heart of barter activities between the Maghats and the lowlanders.
LOCATION AND BRIEF HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
The Barangay of Magballo is located in the South-Central part of Kabankalan town, in the province of Negros Occidental. It is situated near the boundary of Ilog, 29 kilometers away from the Poblacion of Kabankalan.
Magballo can be reach via Kabankalan-Salong-Tapi route or via Kabankalan-Tabo- Tapi route. Both routes cut through mountain dirt roads. Public transport between Magballo and Kabankalan consist mainly of three times a day bus service by Ceres Liner and by some privately owned jeepney plying the Kabankalan-Magballo routes on irregular schedules.
Magballo topography is rolling to hilly with flat lands, along river lines. Elevation ranges from 300-350 feet above sea level. Temperature is between 26-28 degrees centigrade.
Agriculture has since the pre-colonial period been the main source of Magballo’s livelihood. Soil fertility was high and vegetables grew abundantly and in surplus. The transformation of Magballo as an integral part of Negros Sugar country only came about in the 1960’s when sugar central in a nearby barangay was established. Thus, the production pattern of Magballo drastically shifted from food production to mono crop production of sugar for export. To summarize with in the year 1963 started the celebration of the Charter Anniversary of the Barangay.
