History

Barangay Oringao used to be a part/Sitio of Barangay Orong. Long before it is recognized as a barangay of Kabankalan, barangay Oringao have a diverse history as to how it got his name… Oringao.

One familiar story says, that long time ago, the platue of Tinanaw (Now Purok Malangsa) was the gathering place. During Holy week people from far and near as they met to this place. Merry making and festivities were hold for a week long. Loud sounds of tomstoms, the booming of the garage, the laughter and the shout of men filled the air. The main activity however was on Good Friday, the last day of the festival.

One combatants was Langsa, the victor for five consecutive years. he had the strength like of a tamarraws, above all no weapon could pierce his skin. It was said that upon his birth his mother bathed him with crocodile tears at Hilabangan River. Langsa was boastful and arrogant. He was cruel and tricky warrior.

At the date of combat nobody stood up to accept the challenges of boastful langsa. Suddenly from now bare a tall and muscular dark men emerged. He carried no weapons but being him was a very black cat. Some way that cat was his twin at birth. The challenged was accepted by the mysterious stranger. We will fight to death by our bare hands, the ground shock as they fight.

At last, cruel langsa was weakened, as he lay gasping for death. The stranger said, I will spare your life. You have learned your lesson. Upon saying, the warrior turned his back, but trickiness was in Langsa’s heart arising danger. Suddenly aloud meowing sound filled the air. The big black cat learned and caught Langsa’s neck like a cat longing for a rat.

From the time on, parents would be frightened of their children to go for sleeping , Hush, sleep now little one otherwise ORI(that claimed as strangers name) and INGAW(His cat) would come and get you. The historical scene of the battle was called ORINGAO and the highly portion was named Malangsa after the tricky Langsa. Until now, deep canyons remain as reminder that remarkable existence of Langsa and ORI and his Ingaw.

Another story tells about the Bukidnon tribe of Barangay Oringao who lived in the mountains (Bukid) where they spent their lives and traditions remotely, away from the Spaniards and colonizers. They have their leader (Maayong Lalaki), Datu Manyabog. He was chosen by the people of his tribe to rule the community. He was considered the bravest and the wisest man of the tribe and was respected by all of his principles and courage.

As generations passed, great leaders was born from the ancestry of Datu Manyabog… Angao Aliponso, the husband of Awring, whom later Barangay Oringao was named after them. He was a very brave man, and also a healer (babaylan/manugbuhat) that treated the sick. At present, the Bukidnon tribe was led by Tribal leader Werie Nario, also a descendant of Datu Manyabog.

World War II- Kabankalan was made a garrison town by Japanese Imperial Forces who destroyed sugar mills, demolished school buildings, razed houses to the ground, and wreaked havoc to local livelihood. When Oringao was still a Sitio of Barangay Orong, Crispin Carpentero was the known leader at that time along with “informant persons” Jose Sumagaysay, Maximiano Jabagat, and Numeriano Sumuroy.

It was in early 60’s when Oringao separated from Barangay Orong. Barangay Oringao was created by virtue of Municipal Resolution Number 161 dated December 22, 1962. This was also approved by Provincial Board resolution Number 80-a dated January 11, 1963 in accordance with the provision of Section 3, Article 11, of Republic Act No. 2370.
