History
In early days, Tabugon was populated by the Bukidnons which the locals called “Buki” and the famous powerful leader was Ompong. “Ompong” was a man with many wives living in the same house and a traditional healer known as “Babaylan”.
Tabugon is named after an “act of driving or shooing away” the wild animals – Simarons (wild Carabaos), deers, monkeys, wild pigs, etc. – that gathers around water holes to drink and to bathe. “Tabog” is a Hiligaynon word for “driving away or scaring”. It was said that the people who would go to their farm met these animals on their way, the herds blocking their path while they flock in droves to drink in water holes. Thus, the act of shooing delayed them. It was a daily task that the name “tabog” stuck and they later called the place “TABUGON”
Tabugon was once a sitio of barrio Tagoc, led by Lucas Coleta. In 1951 it became a barrio with Procopio Lescano Sr. as Teniente del barrio and Pedro Georfo as Vice. The Early settlers were the families of Lescano, Loriezo, Sayun, Dupo, Georfo, Poblador, Latoza, Tangis, Medina, Paglumotan, Macabales, Alabi, Alonzagay.
During the presidency of the late President Ramon Magsaysay PLS-38 was proclaimed a resettlement area on September 23, 1955. The survey was conducted and finance by PHILCUSAFOA under the supervision of the National Resettlement Rehabilitation Administration (NARRA). President Ramon Magsaysay visited the place aboard a helicopter and the place where he landed is presently marked by the barangay Rotunda. The plan then, was to name the place Luzville Town in honor of the wife of Magsaysay – Luz Banson Magsaysay. This made Tabugon a flourishing Agricultural land and bring about the rapid growth of population by migration.
Tabugon being centrally situated was envisioned by NARRA now MAR (Ministry of Agrarian
Reform) to become the community center of the other four barangays namely: Tagoc; Pinaguinpinan, Inapoy and Bantayan on December 22,1962. It became a full pledge Barangay under Republic Act 2370, Municipal Resolution No. 162-62, Provincial Board Resolution No.822A-63.
In 1968, Dacongcogon Sugar and Rice Milling Co. Inc. under the leadership of Monsignor Antonio Y. Fortich and the late Mr. Benjamin Gaston was organized and established near the Tablas River which is bounded within Barangay Tabugon. With the presence of this Sugar Mill population grew geometrically by migration and economic opportunity.
